Intermed Rebrands as Intermed IUHW Hospital Following Historic Investment
Mar 4, 2026
Tselmeg E.
In a move set to redefine the standards of medical care in the region, Intermed Hospital has officially announced a strategic partnership with the International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW) Group, Japan’s leading private healthcare and education provider. The partnership includes a ¥2.2 billion (approx. $14.5 million USD) investment, marking it as the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mongolia’s private healthcare history. To reflect this synergy, the hospital has been rebranded as Intermed IUHW Hospital.
Breaking Records in Healthcare Investment
The magnitude of this investment represents a significant shift in investor confidence. Historically, the health and social welfare sectors in Mongolia have attracted modest foreign capital, often representing only a fraction of national investment. However, this landmark deal signals a dramatic shift, as the industry’s investment profile is now expanding at an unprecedented scale.
Bringing Japanese Standards to Mongolia
The partnership is more than financial; it is a massive transfer of technology and expertise. IUHW is a powerhouse in Japan, managing 6 hospitals, 65 health centers, and 5 university campuses with over 13,000 employees.
Key upgrades coming to Intermed IUHW include:
- Advanced Diagnostics: The introduction of a 320-slice CT scanner—one of only a few in the world—and a state-of-the-art full-body angiography system for cardiac and neurological interventions.
- Double-Check System: Medical results at Intermed IUHW can now be cross-verified by Japanese specialists, ensuring a secondary layer of diagnostic accuracy.
- Telemedicine & Teleradiology: Patients will have direct access to remote consultations with Japanese doctors for complex cases.
- Human Resource Development: Mongolian doctors and nurses will have the opportunity to train at IUHW’s campuses and hospitals in Japan.
Leadership Perspectives
"Intermed was established to provide world-class healthcare within Mongolia. By partnering with a Japanese leader like IUHW, we are taking a definitive step toward bringing global standards home, ensuring Mongolians no longer need to travel abroad for advanced medical care."
- Odjargal J., Chairman of MCS Group (Founding Partner of Intermed)
"This is the first time the IUHW name is being used by a hospital outside of Japan. We are committed to strengthening Mongolia’s healthcare development through this partnership."
- Takagi Kuninori, Chairman of IUHW Group
As the first JCI-accredited hospital in Mongolia, Intermed IUHW is now positioned to solve two of the country's biggest healthcare hurdles: infrastructure accessibility and specialized human resource shortages.
