Moody’s Revises Mongolian Mining Corporation’s Outlook to Positive; Affirms ‘B2’ Ratings on Gold Mine Ramp-Up

Moody’s Ratings revised the outlook on Mongolian Mining Corporation (MMC) to Positive from Stable, while affirming the company’s ‘B2’ corporate family rating and the ‘B2’ senior unsecured rating of the notes issued by MMC and its subsidiary Energy Resources LLC and guaranteed by other key subsidiaries.

The positive outlook reflects MMC’s improving scale and business diversification following the ramp-up of the Bayan Khundii (BKH) gold mine, in which MMC holds a 50% interest and which commenced commercial production in September 2025. Moody’s forecasts annual gold sales to exceed 50,000 ounces as the mine approaches steady-state operations over the next 12-18 months, compared with around 20,000 ounces sold in 1H 2026. Supported by volume growth and the current gold price environment, the gold segment is expected to contribute more than 35% of consolidated gross profit, reducing MMC’s historical reliance on a single commodity.

Coking coal operations are expected to remain solid, supported by steady demand for Mongolian exports to China and MMC’s competitive cost position across its Ukhaa Khudag and Baruun Naran mines, which produced 9.3 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal in 1H 2026. Moody’s expects MMC to generate positive free cash flow and maintain adjusted debt/EBITDA of around 1.0x, underpinned by disciplined financial policy, moderate capital spending and good liquidity.

The rating remains constrained by MMC’s small scale, emerging market risks and exposure to carbon transition risks. Moody’s could upgrade the rating if MMC demonstrates a sustained track record of improved scale and diversification through the gold mine ramp-up, while maintaining stable coal operations and low leverage. The outlook could return to Stable if the BKH ramp-up underperforms or leverage rises meaningfully due to weaker coal operations or large debt-funded expansion.

CMM Perspective

Moody’s outlook revision marks a notable recognition of MMC’s transition from a pure-play coking coal producer toward a more diversified mining group, with Bayan Khundii emerging as a meaningful earnings contributor. Combined with Fitch’s ‘B+’ affirmation in August, the action reinforces MMC’s position as one of Mongolia’s stronger corporate credits. Key factors to monitor include BKH’s progress toward steady-state output, gold price trends, Chinese coking coal demand, and any debt-funded expansion plans.
