Mongolia's Foreign Exchange Reserves Reach US$8.76 Billion

Mongolia's reserves are up 25% since the start of the year, though higher fuel import payments pulled them slightly lower in October.

Mongolia's foreign exchange reserves stood at US$8,760.8 million at the end of October 2026, according to the Bank of Mongolia's announcement on 5 November. Reserves have risen by US$1,755.5 million, or 25.1%, since the start of the year.

Compared with the previous month, reserves fell by US$136.0 million, or 1.5%. The central bank attributed the monthly decline mainly to higher external payments driven by rising fuel prices.

Reserve adequacy

According to the Bank of Mongolia, the current level of reserves is sufficient to cover eight months of goods imports paid in foreign currency, or six months of goods and services imports. Reserves are also five times higher than Mongolia's short-term external debt payments.

On these measures, the central bank states that Mongolia meets the reserve adequacy criteria widely used internationally.

Exchange rate stability

The Bank of Mongolia notes that the relatively strong reserve position is helping to prevent sharp swings in the tugrik. At the end of October 2026, the official MNT/USD rate had weakened by only 14.0 tugriks, or 0.39%, compared with a year earlier. Average daily volatility was 2.7 times lower than in the same period of 2025.

Why it matters

For international investors, reserves are one of the clearest indicators of Mongolia's capacity to meet external obligations and manage currency pressure. A 25% increase over ten months strengthens the country's external buffers, which supports the credit profile of Mongolian sovereign and corporate issuers and reduces currency risk for foreign investors.

The October decline is a reminder that Mongolia's external position remains sensitive to import costs, particularly fuel. Investors will watch whether reserves resume their upward trend in the final months of the year, as well as the impact of commodity export earnings and fuel prices on the balance.
